Project - Kunkel Riser & Moxon Vise
Project - Kunkel Riser & Moxon Vise
In this project course, you will be making two ergonomic tools that will be indispensable for specialty work (and for your back) - the Kunkel Riser, and a Moxon vise.
The Kunkel Riser is a platform that clamps to your workbench to raise the height of your work surface. This is especially useful for detail work, like chiseling dovetails, but can be used for any application where you need your material closer to you. This riser was designed by me, and it has been incredibly valuable in my hand tool courses when my students need to give their project an extra lift.
The Moxon vise is a portable vise that can be clamped to any work surface — including your kitchen table — which enables you to work on larger projects that a standard-width vise wouldn’t be able to handle, like wide dovetail panels or wide-board hand tool joinery. A standard vise has a width of 9”, whereas the Moxon vise has a width of 15”, giving you significantly more flexibility on what you can work on. My take on this vise also includes Delrin bearings to prevent the adjustment bolts from damaging the wood of the vise, which is a significant improvement over other designs - and is unique to the Mr. Sawdust School design.
